TPLO

We are really excited to now have a visiting surgical specialist (Tim Easter) who comes to Springwell to perform the alternative cruciate repair procedure for our patients, a ‘TPLO’ Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy.

A TPLO prevents stifle instability

The surgery prevents abnormal motion in the stifle joint (knee) by levelling / flattening the joint surface. After surgery, dogs are rested for six to eight weeks to allow healing of the bone. The vast majority of dogs will return to off lead activity and pain free movement.

A TPLO prevents stifle instability. A curved cut is made at the top of the tibia (shin bone) and the cut bone is rotated to flatten the joint surface.

The bone is then held in position using a bone plate & screws. The flattened surface means the cranial cruciate ligament is no longer needed. Most dogs are able to walk on the leg within a few days of surgery.

Aftercare includes use of a buster collar for two weeks to prevent licking, medication with pain killers & antibiotics, and exercise restriction for six to eight weeks whilst the bone heals. After this time, exercise is gradually returned to normal.

When performed by an experienced, trained veterinary surgeon the success rate is very high, and the risk of complications is low.
