Re-Oiling old joints

re oiling joints 4At last we can literally re-oil joints!  There has been a very recent development in the management of arthritic joints which we are now able to provide at Springwell Veterinary Surgery.  After four decades of use of innovative hydrogels, one of these products is now available that acts as a permanent "implant".  It benefits from containing a plasticised polymer which lubricates and scaffolds degenerating cartilage and remains in the joint.  Accumulated data for improved mobility and pain relief are very encouraging.

The best use of this product is likely to be in "end stage" arthritic joints in older patients.  It is injected directly into the joints under general anaesthetic and would be most appropiately used for elbows, knees and shoulders.

Congratulations Patrick!

Most of you will know that our practice owner Patrick Dale has a General Practitioners Certificate in Endoscopy and Endosurgery.  Now, to add to his list of achievements, he has just completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Surgery! This is the most in-depth and hands on 2 year modular surgery programme, which is divided into a soft-tissue component in year one and an orthopaedic/spinal component in year two.

New Ultrasound Scanner

Scanner Photo 1Springwell Veterinary Surgery has purchased a new Ultrasound scanner which reflects the technological improvements that have happened in this area in recent times.  The new scanner is capable of cardiac imagery at referral level.  Due to it's superior processing power, it's frame rate allows excellent images of even a rapidly beating cat's heart.  Enhanced with a real time doppler facility, we can visualise the location and severity of "jets" associated with heart murmers, in colour.

The system has four probes of different frequency bands.  This allows us to optimise images in all animal sizes from small cat to large Newfoundland dog and different organ systems from heart base to prostate.

The aquisition of this scanner reflects our general philosophy of offering the highest specification of diagnostic equipment available, allowing us to most rapidly and effectively deal with the animals under our care.
